Rams to Have New Radio Team This Fall

The Insiders has learned that the CSU Rams will have a new radio broadcasting team this fall when they open the season against Virginia in the Jim Thorpe Classic on August 22nd

Play-by-play voice Wyatt Thompson is leaving his duties at CSU to move into the color man's chair in Boulder – he'll replace Jim Conrad, and team with Larry Zimmer on radio broadcasts of the University of Colorado games this season.

Rich Bircumshaw, who teamed with Thompson and handled the color duties for the Rams on flagship station, AM 1410 KIIX in Fort Collins, will slide over into the pilot's chair this season. His co-pilot is still to be determined.

Names that have been thrown around as possible partners for Bircumshaw include former Denver Broncos kicker David Treadwell, currently a sports anchor at KDVR Channel 31 in Denver, and Mike Nolan of KMGH-TV Channel 7, formerly the play-by-play voice of the Air Force Falcons. There are several other unnamed candidates as well.

Both KIIX and CU flagship station AM 850 KOA in Denver are owned and operated by Clear Channel Communications. The move of Thompson, the sports director at Clear Channel in Denver, is seen as a way of easing him into the lead chair in Boulder for 2003.

Sources say that KIIX wants to have a new color man in place by the first of July.
