Early Word on Patrick:
The state of Colorado is quickly becoming a state of athletes; especially at the running back position. This year, RB Patrick Ealy is projected to be featured as the state's top back, and one who will likely be heavily recruited.
"Some people have argued that Patrick was the best running back in the state last year even with USC signing (Lendale) White," South Head Coach Ryan Mullaney said. "Last season, he was robbed of a lot rushing yards due to being so quick out of the backfield. We could not pitch him the ball in time because how fast he'd explode so we'd end throwing it to him behind the line of scrimmage, and the state official counted it as receiving yards.
Patrick is also an accomplished student, carrying over a 3.0 GPA, and an accomplished track athlete.
"He has been timed at 10.6 in the 100 as a sophomore. Last year, at the state qualifying meet, he just showed up and competed in long jump. He recorded a jump over 23', and ended up finishing fifth or sixth in state. He is an exceptional athlete"
Patrick's father is originally from the state of Alabama. That has helped lead the way in Ealy's interest to play down south.
"He has a desire to play in the south. I know he plans to attend the Alabama camp this summer, and we've sent out film to several southern schools. He has opened up a bit to schools around the area lately, though."
Head Coach Ryan Mullaney played for the Chicago Bears in the glory days with RB Walter Payton. Those experiences have even helped him compare his star back to his former great teammate.
"Patrick makes everyone miss. You know when you're watching a movie, and see a guy wrap up for a tackle, and he ends up wrapping himself rather than the runner. I use to believe that never happened until I witness Patrick do it to a Columbine defender last fall. Patrick runs a lot like Walter Payton, in fact, I think their running styles show a lot of similarity."
