Talented Safety Prospect Names Buffs Favorite

A player who caught our eye at the NorCal Nike Camp a year ago was Oakland Tech (Calif.) defensive back Virdell Larkins. The talented safety should be one of the top players at his position on the West Coast this year.

Larkins, 5-11, 190 pounds clocked a 4.12 in the shuttle and jumped 36 inches in the vertical at the Nike Camp while running a 4.7 in the 40. He looked very good in the one on one drills and we actually rated as one of the top 100 players on the West Coast last year before realizing he was just a junior.

Larkins played on both sides of the ball last year seeing action at strong safety on defense and running back and wide receiver on offense. He'll be a three year starter next season and has earned All-League honors the past two seasons. The athlete is also getting looks in track as he's a 23'9" long jumper and will compete for state honors in that sport.

On the recruiting front, Larkins is hearing from Colorado, Nebraska, UCLA, Washington, Illinois, Arizona State and Oregon.

"Colorado is my top school right now followed by Washington, Oklahoma, UCLA and Miami," Larkins said. "I'm looking for a school with a strong football program and good academic support."

Larkins is carrying a 2.7 GPA and will take the SAT later this year. He'll attend the NorCal Nike Camp in May and said he could also camp at one of his five favorites although nothing is set in stone right now.
