Blacken joins Buffs

Colorado coach Jon Embree has turned to a former colleague with the Washington Redskins and asked him to take over the challenge of building bigger, faster, stronger athletes in Boulder.

Jon Embree hired Malcolm Blacken to serve as strength and conditioning coach, the school announced today.

Blacken replaces former Colorado strength coach Jeff Pitman, who served five years in Boulder but was a casualty of former coach Dan Hawkins' firing.

Blacken brings 15 years of experience with two franchises in the National Football League to the job. He worked nine years as the head strength and conditioning coach of the Detroit Lions and two separate stints as an assistant strength coach with the Redskins, where he developed a friendship with Embree last year.

Blacken is a former Virginia Tech running back, who played his college ball in the mid-1980s at roughly the same time Embree starred as a tight end with the Buffs.

Blacken has worked in the strength and conditioning programs at three colleges, including South Carolina, George Mason and Virginia before his NFL career.
