Kyle Washington eager for Colorado visit

Arizona athlete Kyle Washington is scheduled to make his fourth official visit this weekend to Boulder to check out the Buffs. Get inside for the latest on his recruitment and the timing of his decision.

Kyle Washington earned All-Arizona honors after a strong senior season as a wide receiver at Florence High School. However, Washington is a somewhat unusual case in that none of his final four schools are recruiting him to play receiver.

Washington has previously visited Hawaii, Utah State and New Mexico State and says he will decide between those schools and Colorado. He also holds offers from North Dakota State and Air Force, but he already ruled out those programs.

Washington said Colorado is recruiting him to play cornerback. Utah State and Hawaii are recruiting him for either safety or cornerback and New Mexico State views him as a running back.

"I don't mind. I just want to get on the field," Washington said. "I like to hit. I like the defensive side of the ball as well as offense. When I get into camp, I'm going to try to get in the mix on offense a little bit and see what I can do, but if they want me to play defense, I'll play defense."

Washington's team finished the 2010 season 11-2 and advanced to the state semifinals. He said he rushed for about 700 yards and had about 700 receiving yards as well. He returned punts and kickoffs and finished the year with 25 touchdowns. He makes sure to point out that three of his six punt return touchdowns were called back. He also returned a kickoff to the house.

Defensively he finished with four forced fumbles, three interceptions and 29 total tackles.

Does Washington have a favorite heading into his final trip?

"Actually, I do not," he said before taking his trip to New Mexico State last weekend. "I really enjoyed my time at Hawaii as well as Utah State. There are pros and cons between both of them and I really don't know.

"I'm really excited to take this trip up to Colorado..."

CU defensive coordinator Greg Brown is the primary recruiter for Washington from Colorado. Brown was scheduled to stop by Washington's home Wednesday night in advance of the official visit this weekend. Washington said he and Brown have a good relationship.

"I'm definitely really interested," Washington said. "It's the only BCS school that I have an offer from. I've heard good things about the program. I just want to get up there and see it."

Washington said it is important to him to be able to play at the highest level of college football and the fact he has an offer from a BCS school in Colorado is exciting. But he won't base his decision on that fact alone.

So on what factors will Washington ultimately make his decision?

"Just being comfortable and feeling like I'll be able to come in and play, or at least get a shot to play," he said. "Redshirting is something that I know is an option, but I want to be able to come in and play and try to contribute right away."

Washington said he probably won't wait to make his decision on signing day. He said he plans to announce his choice immediately after visiting Boulder.
