Legendary college basketball coach Bobby Knight said earlier this week he believes Colorado coach Tad Boyle deserves consideration for National Coach of the Year for leading the Buffs to a 21-13 season. Members of the NCAA Tournament selection committee were not as impressed Sunday leaving Boyle and the Buffs out of the expanded field.

Coaches, players and CU administrators collectively had the bubble burst today at a selection show watch party in Longmont at Boyle's house.

The Buffs were expecting an invitation to the dance for the first time since 2003 after finishing fifth in the Big 12 Conference in the regular season and advancing to the semifinals of the Big 12 tournament where they lost to Kansas.

Instead of a big celebration, Colorado received the news that it was one of the six teams that just missed the cut.

Take your pick of any number of close losses and blown leads this season as the culprit for today's news. Point fingers at that early season loss at San Francisco, another early setback at Harvard, a blown 17-point lead at Baylor, a flat-out lousy performance at Oklahoma, a close call at home against Kansas. Win any one of those games, and the Buffs probably would have received a bid.

The Buffs now wait to see who they will play in the NIT and whether they might host a game or two, which would provide fans one final chance to see seniors such as Cory Higgins, Levi Knutson and Marcus Relphorde.
