Scrimmage report

Colorado quarterback Tyler Hansen starred in a 75-minute scrimmage Saturday on the practice fields in Boulder with approximately 500 fans ringing the field to watch.

Tyler Hansen completed 18 of 19 passes for 246 yards and three touchdowns without an interception. He led six drives that ended in touchdowns.

"That one incompletion is bugging me right now," Hansen said.

Hansen threw a 45-yard touchdown pass to Will Jefferson, a 58-yard strike to Paul Richardson and a six-yard touchdown to Rodney Stewart.

Coach Jon Embree wasn't ready to name Hansen the starting quarterback for the 2011 season but fans should be prepared for that to happen after the spring game next weekend.

Hansen has been clearly the best option at quarterback this spring, operating with more confidence and efficiency than Nick Hirschman and Brent Burnette.

Hirschman completed four of 11 passes for 27 yards in the scrimmage. Burnette complete one of five passes for eight yards.

Running backs Josh Ford, Tony Jones and Rodney Stewart ran well. Ford and Jones each gained 60 yards. Ford did it in five carries and Jones carried 11 times. Stewart ran 11 times for 48 yards.

Richardson was the standout receiver. Senior Toney Clemons sat out with a hamstring injury. Richardson caught four passes for 85 yards, including a nice one-handed grab.

Doug Rippy and Conrad Obi led the defense with seven tackles each. Obi made three tackles for loss and forced a fumble. Jon Major, Travis Sandersfeld and Josh Hartigan also played well.

Numerous Colorado defenders sat out with injuries.

"I was disappointed in the defense from the standpoint that we didn't have enough energy and enthusiasm," coach Jon Embree said. "That's 90 percent of defense is just being excited about being out there and having some energy when you run around and hit people. We were just kind of going through the motions, kind of feeling sorry for ourselves, 'Oh man, I've got to go again.'Some of these guys aren't going to get this many reps again. They're going to be wishing they were tired like this."
