Local kicker Ryan Charles was a late entry into the kicking game, but has proven successful so far.
The third year starter for Silver Creek High School in Longmont, Colorado didn't start kicking until his sophomore year in high school, a move which paid off in the long run. "I started kicking my sophomore year and started with kickoffs because we had a senior who took care of field goals. But, once he left, I took over," says Charles.
Charles and the Silver Creek Raptors are coming off a 3A State Football Championship in 2012, which means they expect a lot from themselves this upcoming season. "We only lost 6 starting seniors from last year, which means the amount of starters and guys coming back this year is good," Charles remarks. "We just have to be sure to not get cocky".
In regards to his individual goals for this year, Charles expects a lot of himself. "Last year I was 14 of 19 with a long of 50. I want to be 100 percent from inside 40 yards and get more accurate from longer yardage," Charles states.
The young man is being fielded by four schools at the moment. Charles is being looked at by Colorado, Northern Colorado, Washington State, and Arizona. Though no offers have come in yet, Charles says that Northern Colorado is pushing hard.
Charles has attended Washington State and Colorado's camps so far this summer, and plans on working out at Arizona's this coming weekend. Currently, these are the schools Charles has in his top three. He has a special place in his heart for CU.
"I grew up a CU fan. For as long as I can remember I've been a Buffs fan. My dad has been an avid Buffs fan all my life, which rubbed off on me. I always dreamed of playing basketball for them, actually, but playing football for them would be just as great," he says.
In looking for a school to play for, Charles is looking for the college town feel and a good coaching staff. He also looks at who's ahead of him.
"I have to see what the age of the current kicker is because I want to have a chance to play," he says. "I want to be the guy on a team that can be relied on to put points on the board if we don't make it to the end zone. I hope coaches see that".
