Colorado's defense was a big question mark headed into the 2013 season.
This is a group that was at the bottom of most categories a year ago. What a difference a year can make. While there still are some question marks, this group showed Sunday that they are going to play better defense this season.
New Head Football Coach Mike MacIntyre turned to a Pac 12 veteran defensive coordinator Kent Baer to resurrect the Buffs defense, as he did at several stops across the country, including recently at San Jose State with MacIntyre.
On each Monday BuffPlayBook.com will review the previous weekend's game giving you our Buff Position grades for the week. This week we are a day behind due to Colorado's game against Colorado State being played on Sunday.
It's always easier to grade a victory than a loss and this will definitely be the case with this arch rival game against Colorado State.
The Buffs defense did a good job overall holding Colorado State to less than 300 yards total offense. Take away the two special team touchdowns the Rams scored and this defensive unit only gave up 13 points.
Now to grade the Buffs Defensive Unit
This is a hard group to grade. They got two sacks against Colorado State. The defensive end standout on the team Chidera Uzo-Diribe caused a fumble which ended up being a scoop and score by Buffs defensive back Greg Henderson.
This group needed a more effective pass rush, and will have to continue to improve for PAC 12 play. They have the potential. They have a veteran defensive line coach in Jim Jeffcoat and I feel you will see this group grow and improve as the season progresses.
Another group that has young talent. This group will get better as the season goes. You have to give this group a higher grade based on a curve of starting a true freshman at linebacker in Addison Gillam.
Gillam turned in an incredible first game performance, garnering 14 tackles, 7 solos, and one one sack of 17 yards.
Derrick Webb had seven tackles for the Buffs.
GRADE B to B+
Greg Henderson scooped and scored which was a big turning point in the game Sunday.
Overall this group of defensive backs showed to be more physical, aggressive, and played much better fundamentally.
Another true freshman saw action in this group, in Chidobe Awuzie. It's apparent the sky is the limit for him and Gillam.
This defensive unit overall bent at times, but didn't break as much as past squads have.
You have to give a lot of credit to these defensive coaches. Mike MacIntyre can be seen working with the defense at times. The standout former defensive coordinator and defensive back coach in the NFL knows a few things about good defense.
Kent Baer is a great addition to the Buffs. This defense gave up less than 300 yards and I don't care who you play that's a good outing.
