Notes: Walker Practicing With Sense of Urgency

Lee Walker entered his second-to-last spring with the Buffaloes determined to work his way up the depth chart...

Three broken ribs sidelined Walker for non-conference play last season. When he returned to the mix in week four, other receivers had already established themselves, forcing Walker to a bit role as a sophomore. He did catch a 13-yard pass in the Buffs' win over Stanford.

Seeing how all my good friends on the team did last year, I knew I wanted to come out this spring and show up because I only have two more chances,” said Walker. “Seeing everybody else evolving and improving and making big plays just made me want to step my game up.

Coach 'Chev' (Darrin Chiaverini) coached me last year but now I am actually taking the coaching and applying it to my game, and I'm watching way more film.”

After practicing at Y-receiver as an underclassman, Walker has been learning to play H-receiver this spring. Quarterback Steven Montez has mentioned Walker numerous times this spring as a standout, most recently following Friday morning's practice.

He has shown that we can trust him,” Montez said of Walker. “He has a lot of speed, a lot of burst to him and I think he is going to be a good weapon for us to have in the slot this year.”

Walker also aims to be on multiple special teams units this year. He is part of the group fielding kickoffs this spring.

I should be able to have a bigger role on the team this year,” he said. “I want to actually be out there making plays and putting my blood on the line for my teammates.”

Additional notes -

*** Walker has not raced his teammates but he is thought to be one of the Buffaloes' fastest players in terms of straight-line speed.

Everyone usually says me or 'Dev' (Devin Ross) are the fastest. I would say that is probably accurate,” Walker said. “Shay [Fields] is pretty fast, too.”

*** Senior wide receiver Bryce Bobo had two touchdown grabs during the scrimmage portion of Friday's practice.

Beau Bisharat looked good today, too,” Montez said. “As an offense we started fast, then had a rough stretch before finishing strong. It was good that we faced adversity, adjusted and then played well again.”

*** When asked which defensive backs have been impressing him this spring, Montez began praising junior cornerback Isaiah Oliver.

Isaiah is playing on a different level right now. He is carrying on the 'Money Gang' [tradition],” Montez said. “We have some other young guys that are doing good things but they are making mistakes as well. They are going to get better. Nick Fisher has looked great and then obviously 'Fo' (Afolabi Laguda) and Ryan Moeller, they are veterans, they have been here a while, so they are looking good as well.”

*** The Buffaloes will practice on Monday, Wednesday and Friday next week in advance of the spring game event on March 18.
