Cross Country/Golf Notes

A look at the recent wins by CU in women's and men's Cross Country and the latest happenings in CU Golf.

Assisted by efforts from redshirt sophomore Dathan Ritzenhein and Natalie Florence, both the No. 4 University of Colorado men's cross country team, and the No. 9 women's teams claimed victory in all four Big 12 Championship races, and CU executed its fifth-straight sweep of both team and both individual contests on the Barton Creek Lakeside Golf Course in Austin, TX on Friday… Ritzenhein extended CU's streak of individual men's titles to seven when he crossed the finish line in 24 minutes, 11 seconds; a comfortable 14 seconds ahead of runner up and pre-race threat and hometown favorite; Texas' Paul Morrison (24:25) who finished nine seconds ahead of Colorado sophomore Billy Nelson (24:34)… CU will be off until this weekend when they'll travel to Colorado Springs to compete in the Air Force Open on Saturday. The meet will be the team's final regular season competition of the season before CU will travel to Oregon on Nov. 15 for the NCAA Regional Championship.

The University of Colorado men's golf team pulled off a program first Sunday in posting a third place finish in The Nelson Tournament held last weekend by host Stanford University. Duke turned in a team 9-under 275 for the final 18 holes and overtook Washington for the team title, as the Blue Devils closed with an 834 score, 18-under par, to edge the Huskies by three shots. Colorado, who recorded a 5-under 279 Sunday to match their first round score, moved from fourth to third the final day in finishing at 10-under 842… The effort marked the first time in school history that Colorado shot two sub-280 scores in the same tournament, and the 842 team total for 54 holes shattered the program's best previous total on a par-71 course, besting an 853 score CU recorded at the 1994 NCAA Central Regional… The Buffs are busy preparing for their fourth tournament of the season, the 2003 Prestige at PGA West in LaQuinta, California beginning Sunday.
