CU Running Crew vs. A&M Wrecking Crew

That loud "smash" you might hear echoing from Folsom Field Saturday could be the Buffs bruising running game colliding with the Texas A&M's #2 nationally ranked defense.

Did I just flashback to my college days at CU in 1989? If I didn't know better, I would have sworn that was Eric Bieniemy running all over the Kansas State Wildcats last Saturday. But no, EB was standing on the sidelines coaching the #1 rated rushing game in the Big 12 and I was not at a kegger. Bieniemy has taken the CU running game back in time. The Buffs are averaging 235 yards per game and are second in the conference behind Nebraska and ninth nationally. CU hasn't run like this since the Bill McCartney days. Eric Brown has become the work-horse, racking up 492 yards in five games. He buffaloed the K-State defense for 114 yards last week and what's really amazing is that he has yet to be thrown for a loss in 107 rushing attempts. I hope I am not the kiss of death with that factoid. But it is not just the Chris Brown show. RB's Bobby Purify (352 yards, 68 yard ave.) and Cortlan Johnson (183 yards, 37 yard ave.) give the Buffaloes a different look when they come into the game. They can also give Brown a much-needed break during the game. And don't forget about Marcus Houston. Although he only touched the ball once last week, Houston is healthy and will should see some more playing time. All four runningbacks will have their work cut out when they go against the "wrecking crew" defense from Texas A&M. The Aggies are currently the second ranked defense in the nation and have emassed some pretty impressive numbers. Texas A&M has surrendered only 64 total points this year and have not allowed any points in the forth quarter. They are led by Jr. Linebacker Jarrod Penright, who has already racked up 8.5 sacks in five games. So this is what football games are about. A potent offensive running game against a stingy, tough defense. You might want to bring some ear-plugs to Boulder Saturday.
