Around Big 12 Men's Basketball
NU guard Muhleisen returns… Nebraska junior guard Jake Muhleisen, who fractured his hip in the Big 12 opener last year, returned to league play last week, recording a season-high 16 points while hitting 4-of-7 from beyond the arc in the Huskers' loss to Iowa State Saturday. Muhleisen, fourth on the team in scoring with 9.1 points per game, added five rebounds and a steal in 30 minutes.
Tech senior Emmett climbing the charts… Texas Tech's Andre Emmett is climbing the Big 12 career charts quite quickly. After leading the Big 12 in scoring last season with a 21.8 average, the senior leads the league once again this season at 22.2. Emmett is 12 points shy of becoming only the third player in the seven-year history of the Big 12 to score 1,900 points for his career, and enters the week third on the conference career scoring list with 1,888 points.
Baylor… The Bear bench, which consists of five walk-ons, scored a combined 47 points in the last week; led by sophomore Will Allen who has averaged more than 15 minutes in the past three games after playing little more than three minutes a game to start the season.
Colorado… The Buffs closed out their nonconference season with an 8-4 record following their victory over Northern Colorado Saturday, during which CU shot better than 50 percent from the field. Sophomore Jayson Obazuaye made his second straight start at point for Ricardo Patton's team, dropping a career-high 17 points and had four assists while maintaining a perfect 6-of-6 from the free throw line.
Iowa State… Iowa State began the Big 12 season with two victories over Missouri (70-65) and Nebraska (89-74) last week. Against MU guard Curtis Stinson showed absolutely no freshman jitters as he scored 16 of his game-high 22 points in the second half. Eight of those in the final 5:32 during a 14-2 ISU run.
Kansas… With their win over CU last week, the Jayhawks have now won 13 consecutive-openers, dating back to the team's participation in the Big 8. Already early into its conference slate, KU is riding the confidence of one of the most statistically solid defenses in program history. The Jayhawk defense has held opponents to the fewest points (63.7) since 1980-81.
Kansas State… The Wildcats enter Big 12 play with their best non-conference mark of the Jim Wooldridge era and the best by a Wildcat squad since the 1998-99 team went 11-2. K-State finished its out-of-conference year having gone 8-0 at home for the first time in five seasons.
Missouri… Mizzou is 4-1 at home this season, and is now 398-69 all-time at the Hearnes Center and 18-2 over the past two seasons at home. The Tigers, ranked in the top five in both polls to begin the season, are 39-29 against Big 12 opposition under head coach Quin Snyder, who recorded the 90th win of his career Saturday over Texas A&M.
Nebraska… The Huskers have out-rebounded 10 of the 12 opponents they've seen this season, and have posted a 9-1 mark in those contests. NU is averaging 38.8 rebounds per game and owns a plus-8.6 rebounding margin following its nonconference season.
Oklahoma… Oklahoma fell from the unbeaten ranks at the hands of No. 1 Connecticut 86-59 on Sunday, bringing an end to the last unblemished record of any team in the Big 12 this season. Prior to the UConn game, Oklahoma has held its last seven opponents to an average of 51.4 points, 21.1 turnovers per game, and a combined .366 shooting percentage.
Oklahoma State… OSU has won at least 10 nonconference games in each of the last 10 seasons after closing out this year's campaign with a 10-1 record. The Cowboys have failed to reach the 10-win nonconference plateau only once as a member of the Big 12, in the inaugural year of the conference.
Texas… Texas improved to 6-0 in Big 12 openers under head coach Rick Barnes with a 79-57 win against Baylor Sunday. Since taking the reigns in Austin, Barnes has emerged as the most successful college head coach in the state. Texas is 43-2 over in-state schools in the Barnes era, including marks of 12-0 against Baylor, 9-1 against Texas A&M and 10-1 against Texas Tech.
Texas A&M… Senior Jesse King has scored in double figures in a team-high nine games this season for the Aggies, who last week set a Big 12 Conference record for free throw percentage in a single game (23-24; 95.8%) in their win over Long Island.
Texas Tech… The Red Raiders have won their second conference opener in three seasons under head coach Bobby Knight. Tech's 83 points as a team against Oklahoma State Saturday marked the sixth time this season the Raiders have scored 80+ points.
