CU freshman Waner named co-Big 12 Player of the Week

University of Colorado freshman guard Emily Waner and Baylor sophomore Sophia Young were named co-players of the week in the conference's weekly meeting Sunday.

Waner, already named conference rookie of the week twice this season hit a trio of three-pointers in the second half to help Colorado to a 15-point lead and helped hold off the Jayhawks for a 59-49 Buffalo win in Lawrence Tuesday. Over the last week she's averaged 10.5 points, 3.5 assists and shot a staggering 58.3% from three point land.

Emily is the first player not in her team's regular starting lineup to have been voted the honor. She's shot 49 percent (37-75), and scored 8.9 points in 23 minutes per game for the 14-2 Buffs.

Young, a 6-foot-1 sophomore post, was impressive in Baylor's two games last week, a victory over No. 3 Texas and a one-point loss at No. 2 Texas Tech. She averaged 19.0 points and 7.0 rebounds while playing only 20.5 minutes a game.

OSU's Lucas headlines men's player of the week honors

Oklahoma State junior guard John Lucas scored 22 points against Oklahoma and 21 at Kansas State in earning Phillips 66 Big 12 Player of the Week honors announced Sunday.

In the Cowboys' 77-56 win over then-No. 11 Oklahoma, Lucas scored 22 points on 9-of-14 (64.3 percent) shooting, including 2-of-3 from beyond the arc. He enters the week with a 12.3 scoring average and is second in the Big 12 with 5.14 assists per game. He leads the conference in assist-to-turnover ratio at 3.00.

Around Big 12 Men's Hoops

Baylor… Last Friday senior center R.T. Guinn and senior forward Terrance Thomas were granted waivers of an academic eligibility rule by the NCAA and had their eligibility restored. The two student-athletes were declared ineligible for competition by BU on January 3. On Jan. 12, the University filed a waiver request with the NCAA's membership services staff on the players' behalf, which was granted this week.

Colorado… Blair Wilson broke the CU record for most three-pointers made in a career (219) topping the former mark of Stevie Wise 214 set from 1987-91. Wilson also set or tied four more records in his team's victory over Iowa State including making his first six three-pointers shots without a miss; tying a half record (6), tying for threes made in a conference half, and tying the mark for consecutive three-pointers made. The senior ranks third in the Big 12 with 219 three-pointers made.

Iowa State… Iowa State continued its struggles on the road after losing its 18th consecutive conference road game against Colorado last Saturday. The Cyclones lost the battle of the boards for just the second time in the last eight games against the Buffs, 48-43.

Kansas The Jayhawks have won five straight after going undefeated last week; beating Kansas State at home Wednesday and Texas A&M on the road Saturday, and KU has now won an even dozen Big 12 Conference games dating back to last season. The streak is just one in a number of impressive streaks Bill Self has taken over in Lawrence; most impressive being KU's 52 straight over unranked opponents.

Kansas State… Kansas State out-rebounded Oklahoma State 42-22 last Saturday. The Wildcats have now out-rebounded their opponent in 11 of the 13 games played so far this season. With 20 more rebounds than the Cowboys, it marked the third time this season Kansas State has recorded at least 20 more rebounds than their opponent.

Missouri Five Tigers reached double figures in scoring with their overtime win at OU last week, the third time it's happened this season. It was the second game in which Mizzou has rallied back to win a game after trailing by more than 10 in the second half.

Nebraska NU's defense remains among the best in the nation, held Texas (the nation's leading offense; averaging higher than 90 points per game this season) to a stunning 27 points Saturday. Meanwhile, senior Brian Conklin has been deadly from long range, hitting 13 of his last 20 attempts from beyond the arc.

Oklahoma… Against Mizzou, Lawrence McKenzie made his first start since the third week of the regular season, and scored a game-high 16 points in his return effort. All the while true freshmen have led the Sooners in scoring in seven of 13 games (McKenzie twice).

Oklahoma State… Oklahoma State's one point win over Kansas State last week marked just the second time in their past 12 wins when the Pokes have claimed victory by less than 15 points.

Texas… The Texas bench is averaging 39.5 points per game. UT's opponents' bench is at 20.3; helping the Horns in carrying a 25-game home winning (dating back to a 96-71 win against Texas Tech on Feb. 26, 2002) into Saturday's game against Oklahoma State. The stretch marks a tie for the second-longest since the team moved to the Erwin Center in 1977-78.

Texas A&M… Senior Andy Slocum had 14 rebounds against Kansas, to tie his career-best for Big 12 play (he had 14 against Oklahoma as a sophomore). He set his overall best with 16 earlier this season against Prairie View A&M. Slocum also added a career-high four assists at Kansas.

Texas Tech… Texas Tech's win against Baylor gave the Red Raiders a 10-game winning streak which matches the longest in the three seasons under head coach Bob Knight.
