Juniors to Watch: Montbello

Head Coach Oliver Lucas at Denver's Montbello High School was once an assistant at Colorado and he was considered at that time to be one of the best recruiters in the nation. So he knows division one talent when he sees it and he feels he has eight players this year that fit that bill. He goes as far as to say that he thinks a couple of them will be playing on Sundays and will be recruited by every school in the nation.

Montbello went 10-2 last year before losing in the playoffs. They expect to make a much deeper run this year with the abundance of talent in place.

Jerrell Yates is a 6-1, 185 pound wide receiver whom Coach Lucas has high hopes for.

"He is a primetime player and he will play on Sundays. I have never missed on a prediction yet and I can tell you that's where he'll end up. He is a blue chip without a doubt. Everyone in the nation will want him."

Coach Lucas predicts that Jerrell runs in the 4.3-4.4 range for his 40 time.

Free Safety Aaron Stubblefield is the first cousin of NFL great, Dana Stubblefield. Aaron is a 6-2, 190 pound prospect who runs the 40 in 4.5.

"He is a can't-miss player," says Coach Lucas. "He is primetime all the way and he is also academically sound. All of these guys I am telling you about will have no problem with academics."

Both Stubblefield and Yates were first team all-conference as juniors.

Running Back Michael Houston is a transfer from East High.

"He is the second coming of Lendale White. He is so fast for his size it is amazing. He is not related to Marcus Houston but he is just like him off the field. He recently started up his own program which has to do with young men against violence."

John West is a 6-6, 285 pound offensive lineman who runs a sub 5.0 40.

"The kid can flat-out run. He can jump, he can run, he is just a great athlete for his size. He is fast, strong, and and has great hands."

Middle Linebacker Dominic Taylor is a Mullen transfer who is 6-2, 235 pounds and runs the 40 in 4.7.

"He runs very well and he is extremely strong. He is a guy that will shoot up the charts this year."

Steve Johnson is a 6-1, 187 pound corner who runs the 40 in 4.45 seconds.

"He was an all-conference guy for us as a freshman and sophomore. Then he moved to Oklahoma for the first semester of this year but now he is back and will play for us next season."

Sean Partridge is a 6-1, 185 pound wide receiver whom Lucas refers to as "the other half of Jerrell Yates".

"He runs in the 4.5 range. He is another primetime player. He is a tough kid who is just a playmaker."

Katrel Larkins will be the signal caller for Montbello this year and Coach Lucas may have saved his greatest praise of all for Larkins.

"If you want to know what Michael Vick looked like in high school, this kid is it. He has a major league arm and a vertical jump that is off the charts."

Coach Lucas re-iterated that he expects all of these players to go to the division one level at a minimum. He thinks most of them will go at the high divison one level.

Coach Simms of Colorado was at Montbello recently to take a look at all of the players.

Coach Lucas says that his players have all been invited to camps everywhere. USC, Texas, UCLA, CU , Missouri, Arizona State, Oregon, and Kentucky are a few of the schools showing early interest.
