Buffs fall in NCAA first round

The Colorado women's basketball team traveled to the University of California-Santa Barbara for the first round of the NCAA Tournament with hopes of extending their season. But the Gauchos ended those hopes with an impressive victory over a suprisingly lackluster Colorado squad. UCSB ran past the Buffs, 76-49, sending the Buffs home with their earliest exit from the tourney since 1992.

Colorado had an uncharacteristic 22 turnovers in the game. UCSB took advantage of CU's generosity by getting out on the fast break and converting. UCSB led 41-26 at the half.

The Gauchos extended their lead in the second half, holding the Buffs without a field goal until the 11:54 mark. On the game, Colorado made just 12-of-42 shots for 29 percent. Tera Bjorklund, playing in her final game as a Buff, led CU with 15 points. Fellow senior Randie Wirt added 12 points, but managed just one rebound.

CU's season ends with a 22-8 record. Along with Bjorklund and Wirt, the game marked the end of the line for seniors Maria Billingsley and Kate Fagan as well.
