Colorado 20, WSU 12

For the second time in as many weeks, the Colorado defense rose up and stopped its opponent on the final play of the game to preserve CU's victory. The Buffs beat Washington State 20-12 in Seattle Saturday, moving to 2-0 in the young season.

Down by eight points, Washington State was on a strong drive at the end of the game when freshman CU linebacker Jordon Dizon hit WSU quarterback Alex Brink inside the five-yard line and forced a fumble as time ran out.

The two teams had played to a 3-3 tie through two quarters, but two big second-half plays by Colorado — one a punt block by Tyrone Henderson, the other an interception by Joe Sanders — led to the Buffs' only two touchdowns on the afternoon.

Lawrence Vickers recovered the blocked punt in the end zone, putting CU ahead 10-3. Later, Sanders picked off a Brink pass and returned it 51 yards for a touchdown.

The Cougars answered with a touchdown, but the two-point conversion attempt failed. Terrence Wheatley returned the ensuing kickoff 59 yards to set up a Mason Crosby 41-yard field goal, his second of the day.

Two series later, Brink and the WSU offense got the ball on their own 44 with 1:13 to play. But after Brink drove the Cougars down the field toward the goal line over the next 605 seconds, Dizon stuffed Brink at the two with time running out and Matt McChesney recovered the quarterback's fumble.

Despite the win, CU's offense struggled mightily. Quarterback Joel Klatt was 12-of-24 for just 78 yards and one interception, and looked unsettled all afternoon. Unlike last week when the CU running game racked up over 250 yards, WSU was effective at stuffing the Buffs' rushing attack. CU managed just 47 yards on 37 attempts.

However, the CU defense held WSU to just 15 yards on 40 rushes.
