Backowski a Buff (free content)

Colorado needed some offensive tackles and they scored on Thursday afternoon. After an in-home visit with the CU coaches, Paul Backowski says he is excited to be a Buffalo. He was a first team all-state selection this year and second team all-state last year. We get his thoughts on the commitment.

"I am going to Colorado," he said. "Coach Barnett and Borbely were here from 3:30 to about 6:15 and I committed to them. I am excited to be a Buffalo. It does not get much better than that. I already cancelled my visits with Indiana and Minnesota.

"The best advice I recieved during the recruiting process was if I was to suit up for a certain school tomorrow, who would it be? Colorado is the one that kept popping up. I don't want to play in the Motor City Bowl. I want to play in the Fiesta Bowl and play for National Championships every year. Colorado has a winning attitude. They want you to win; whether it be in the classroom, the weight room, or on the field. They demand hard work there."

He had written offers from Minnesota, Indiana, and Wyoming. "I am not an urban guy so I just couldn't see myself living in the Twin Cities for the next four to five years. I went there for a camp this summer for four days and realized it wasn't me. I like the campus and atmosphere at Colorado much better."

Backowski had committed to Indiana back in June, but when the coaches were fired in December he decided to look around. "I played my butt off as a senior so we had some good tape to send around. A lot of teams were filling up at that point so they didn't have a need at my position, but fortunately Colorado did. We had a player at Foley, Conrad Emmerich, play for Coach Barnett at Northwestern so my coach had a connection with Barnett. He thinks very highly of him as a coach and told me he would be great to play for."

The lineman was named first team all-conference, area, and state as a senior. As a junior, he was named second team all-state.

Backowski also competes in the shotput where he finished 12th in the state as a sophomore and 6th as a junior. His personal best is a 55'1.

He describes his strengths on the field. "I have good speed getting off the line. I make good use of my leverage."

Backowski carries a 3.3 core GPA and scored a 23 on his ACT. He would like to major in Business.
