Buffs land Notre Dame transfer

Former Notre Dame hoopster Susie Powers will join the Colorado women's basketball team this fall as a transfer. The 5-10 guard, who prepped at Highlands Ranch High School, will use a redshirt year in 2005-06 as she sits out a mandatory transfer year, then have two years of eligibility.

"We are extremely excited to have Susie as part of our program," CU head coach Kathy McConnell-Miller said. "She is one of the great players from the state of Colorado which will be a priority in recruiting for us. We look forward to her contributions on and off the floor and although she won't be competing this season, we know what she will bring immediately to this team — great leadership and outstanding work ethic."

A native of Centennial, Colo., Powers was a part of three Colorado Class 5A state championship teams at Highlands Ranch High School (2000-02) and was the starting point guard when the Falcons were ranked No. 1 in the nation in 2002. Powers was a teammate of UConn's Ann Strother on those Highlands Ranch teams. She averaged 13.6 points and 6.8 assists per game over her prep career including a personal-best 15.7 per game as a senior. Powers was a two-time Street & Smith's honorable mention All-American and a Parade honorable mention All-American in 2003.

Powers played in 41 games over two seasons with the Fighting Irish averaging 6.5 minutes per game. Notre Dame was 48-17 with Powers on the roster advancing to a pair of NCAA Tournaments, including a Sweet 16 appearance in 2004.
