Jones Makes Position Switch

True freshman Zach Jones has moved from the defensive line to the offensive line.

Zach Jones moved from defensive line to center this past Tuesday. Strength and conditioning coach Greg Finnegan, who played offensive line in college, first approached him about the idea. On Monday, however, Jones said the decision was his to make.

Jones, out of Grandview High School, enrolled in school this past January and played spring ball with the Buffs. He had played three positions on the defensive front since then, but had seemed to settle in at defensive tackle.

Jones said he's not looking at the move as a trial, but as a permanent move. He is currently backing up juniors Mark Fenton and Bryce MacMartin. Fenton has one year of eligibility remaining after this season. MacMartin entered 2005 with three years to play two, and he has played in three games in 2005. Redshirt-freshman Daniel Sanders also plays center and guard.

Asked how the move was going after a week, Jones said, "As soon as I get my technique down, I'll be fine."

He played defensive end and tight end in high school, but this is his first time at center, he said.
