Dermody Leaves School, Basketball Team

Freshman forward basketball player Ryan Dermody has withdrawn from school and will not play for the Buffs this fall, the Buffalo Sports News has learned.

Ryan Dermody, a 6-foot-7 freshman from Loveland, has withdrawn from school for personal reasons and will not play this semester for the Buffaloes. Dermody did not make the team's preseason trip to Canada, where the Buffs played three exhibition games.

He is in good academic standing. The possibility remains he would be allowed to return next semester or next year, CU head coach Ricardo Patton said Monday. However, if that happened, it's unclear whether Dermody would have a scholarship waiting. Patton said he intended to speak with Dermody and his parents soon to discuss Ryan's future with the team.

Dermody was a walk-on this semester, with a promise of earning a scholarship next year after eight scholarships open due to eight seniors graduating from the current roster.

Dermody was a two-time all-Area Player of the Year selection at Loveland High School, where he averaged 19 points and nine rebounds as a senior.

The Colorado men's basketball team begins its 2005-06 season practices Friday evening.
