As a senior, Michael Sipili was voted all-state and played in the east-west Hawaii all-state game. "I made it to the game, but I am not sure how many tackles or sacks I had," Sapili explained. "I played at both rush end and linebacker. I lined up in different spots all year."
Th colleges recruiting Sapili seem to like him at both those positions. "Colorado likes me as a middle linebacker that could also rush off the end in passing situations. Oregon State likes me at both positions. Those are really the only two schools I am considering right now."
The versatile defender also had offers on the table from Boise State, New Mexico State and San Diego State before deciding on the duo. He visited Oregon State in December and gave OSU a verbal commitment soon after. Colorado convinced him to take a visit to Boulder, and then things changed. "The trip to Colorado really opened my eyes to a lot of things. I felt real comfortable there with the coaches they have."
He had a good chat with the CU coaches about their intentions for him if he signs with the Buffs. "I sat down and had a long conversation with coaches Hawkins, Cabral and (Ron) Collins. They told me they envision me as a WILL or MIKE linebacker in their scheme and my main duty would be to stop the run. Then on third downs, they want to move me around and put me as a rush end."
Sapili talks about his visit to Boulder. "I loved everything about it; the coaches, the facilities, the players, and the environment. The main thing I like, though, is my position coach, coach Cabral. He has a great tradition with linebackers there and I want to be coached by him. He is a cool guy and is very wise about the position. He would be great to play for."
Oregon State came by the house last night right before we spoke with Sapili. "The coach was just telling me that they really want me there and stuff like that. Boise State has also been here and Cabal is coming by on Wednesday night. I will probably not make my decision until signing day. I really like both Colorado and Oregon State and now I just need to figure everything out."
Sapili carries a 3.0 core GPA and scored a 750 on the SAT. He says he will take it again, but is fully qualified. He is undecided on a major.
