As a junior, Lamont Smith earned first team all-conference and second team all-state honors after rushing for more than 2,000 yards and 29 touchdowns. However, he is being recruited as a cornerback and says he will start both ways this fall. "Every school after me likes me as a corner," explains Smith. "I haven't really played the position too much so I am going to get more experience playing it this fall when I start on defense and offense."
Smith received his first written offer today from Arizona State. "I just got it in the mail. The coach at Toledo told me that they want to offer but he wants me to meet the head coach before they do. Colorado also really liked me at the combine and the coaches told me they'll be offering.
"I spoke with Coach Hagan and he told me they need corners and that they think I am real good. I called him after the combine and he put me on the phone with the head coach and the head coach told me I can expect an offer this week or next week."
As for his thoughts on the Buffs, Smith says, "I didn't watch Colorado too much last year. I know they have a pretty good football team and I hear they have a good atmosphere there. The coaches seem like they are cool."
Smith says he'll be looking for two main things in a school. "I want good academics and a good atmosphere."
He lists his top five. "I don't have a favorite, but right now I like Arizona State, Colorado, Toledo, Virginia Tech, and Boston College."
Smith feels he has great skills for the college game. "My play speaks for itself. I'm very physical for my size and I shut down receivers. I'm a strong man-to-man cover corner. My speed is a big asset at that position, too. I have great speed, vision and quickness."
He carries a 2.8 core GPA and received a passing SAT score. Smith would like to major in Sports Management.
