Behrens Follows His Heart

The new CU staff is going all over the place for future Buffs; California to Idaho to Pennsylvania, and now they have landed one of the bigger fish in Arizona. Offensive Lineman Blake Behrens committed to the CU staff on Monday and it was a long time coming in his estimation. He chose the Buffs over a handful of other schools and becomes the second O-line commit of the class.

As a junior, Blake Behrens was a first team all-region and state selection. He started both ways as an offensive and defensive tackle for 5A state champion, Brophy Prep. He also does track and plays basketball.

Behrens was one of the standout performers at the recent CU camp and the day after the camp the Buffs' staff let him in on some good news. "The Colorado staff was impressed enough with me that they told me they were offering," explained Behrens. "I had gone to the CU camp straight from the Miami camp and the Miami staff told me that they were really interested and that I could expect an offer from them. They called my coach and said the same thing.

"It was pretty much between those two schools, but I never received the Miami offer in the mail. I think the reason for that was because after Colorado offered I basically told them that that was where I wanted to go."

Behrens grew up loving the Buffs, mainly because of his parents. "I have always been leaning towards CU. My mom was born and raised in Boulder and she went to school there. My Dad went to school at Colorado, too. They both transferred to Arizona State and graduated from there, though. When my Mom was at CU, she was good friends with my recruiting coach at Colorado, Brian Cabral. They were there at the same time."

When the Arizona-native travelled to Boulder recently, he knew it was the place for him over his other school options. "I just loved the atmosphere. It is closer to home and I don't like the humidity that is in Miami. We go on vacation every year to Vail so I feel at home in Colorado. I liked how Coach Strausser and Coach Hawkins were with the players. They were not the get-in-your-face type of coaches but they had the players' attention. I respond better to coaches like that."

With the Behrens family living in Phoenix, and his parents having graduated from ASU, the Buffs' upcoming match-ups with the Sun Devils are of major interest. "I think my whole family will be going to Boulder for the game this year. I have never been to a game at CU, so I am excited."

Before deciding on CU, the offensive lineman had written offers from Colorado State, Oregon State, Utah, Washington State, Boise State, and UTEP.

CU has recruited him specifically for the O-line. "The coaches tell me they like me as a guard or center. I like playing both positions so it doesn't matter which one I play at."

Behrens carries a 3.0 core GPA and has already passed the SAT and ACT. He is thinking of majoring in Business.
