VanWright Backs Away From Buffs

What Ricardo Patton called his best recruiting class at Colorado took a hit this week when Dale VanWright announced that he's decided to enroll in a prep school rather than at the University of Colorado this fall.

Dale VanWright, from Bellaire High School in a suburb of Houston, was one of the first players to commit to the Buffaloes last summer. His father, however, told the Daily Camera Thursday that the 6-foot-6 guard/forward will attend CornerStone Christian High School — a prep school in San Antonio — this coming school year.

"We decided it would be in his best interests to attend a preparatory school for one year," Dale VanWright Sr. told the Camera.

A spokesperson for the CU basketball program had no comment when BSN inquired about the situation Thursday.

The Camera reported VanWright Sr. said his son's decision to go the prep-school route had nothing to do with the fact Patton is in the final year of his contract, and his future as CU coach after next season is unclear. He said Dale Jr. still may end up in a CU uniform after next season.

Dale Jr. played with three other CU recruits in the Joint Effort tournament in Denver in the spring. Patton called this year's crop his best recruiting class ever at Colorado, and Dale VanWright was considered by some to be the plum of the class.
