Helfrich indicated the staff had made a decision already. Brian White, Bernard Jackson and James Cox have been battling all camp. While Cox came into August — after missing spring with a hand injury — the darkhorse, he looks to have taken a slight edge the past week.
Hawkins reiterated Sunday morning his dislike for a two-quarterback system. He said he's done that twice in the past, with poor results. Hawkins also said he expects whoever isn't the starter to accept his role as backup.
• Hugh Charles is out (day to day) with a high-ankle sprain. Asked if he were healthy today, who would be the starting tailback, running backs coach Darian Hagan declined to answer. But it's obvious Hagan has been pleased with the work of Mell Holliday, who ran with the first team offense Sunday morning.
• Several players were out of pads today, nursing injuries. Included in the group were Charles, Walter Boye-Doe, Edwin Harrison, Ryan Walters, Thaddaeus Washington, R.J. Brown, Jimmy Smith, Terry Wilson, Lorenzo Sims, B.J. Beatty, Marquez Herrod and Abraham Wright. Hawkins said it's more than he's used to having out at this point in a fall camp.
