Basketball Team Takes a Hit

For the second consecutive season, the Colorado men's basketball team will play during the fall semester with one of its main players on the bench due to academic issues. Senior guard Marcus Hall has been declared academically ineligible for the current semester.

Marcus Hall is one of two seniors on the CU roster, and has 44 career starts under his belt. But he won't be available to lend his experience to what will be a young Colorado squad in the coming months.

Ricardo Patton announced Wednesday that Hall, a sociology major, will miss the fall semester due to grades.

"Marcus will be able to use the semester to focus solely on academics, giving him the opportunity to receive a degree from the University of Colorado," Patton said in a statement.

A year ago, then-senior center Julius Ashby sat out the fall semester to get his grades in order. Patton allowed Ashby to practice once a week with the team in order to devote the rest of his time on academics. Though Patton was unavailable for comment, a source thought that would be the restriction Hall is under, too.

Hall's academic situation will be re-evaluated in December, at the end of the fall semester, when it will be determined if he can play the spring semester.

Meanwhile, freshman guard James Inge and another unnamed incoming freshman have yet to be cleared by the NCAA Clearinghouse, BSN has learned. A source said both were expected to be cleared in the coming days.

Hall has been an integral part of the CU team the past two seasons, moving between shooting guard and point guard. The Buffs officially begin season practices Oct. 14.

With Hall out of the picture, CU has two true point guards on its scholarship roster, Kal Bay and Dwight Thorne. Both are freshmen.

Senior Dominique Coleman played point guard at CU last season, but it was the first time he'd played the position.

Three players on the roster can play the shooting guard position, including junior Richard Roby, and freshmen Inge and Xavier Silas.

Also of note, the Buffs have recently added a walkon to their roster; Trent Beckley, a 6-10 forward from Battle Mountain High School in Vail.
