Future Buffs Shine at All-Star Showcase

A couple of future Colorado Buffaloes shared the Most Outstanding Player Award for their play Saturday at the Rocky Mountain Fall Showcase. Stephen Franklin and Levi Knutson took home the honor as their squad defeated another local all-star squad in the game held at ThunderRidge High School.

Stephen Franklin and Levi Knutson should both be wearing the black and gold next year, as the pair of Colorado prepsters have verbally committed to playing for the Buffs in 2007. Saturday they teamed up on the "Seniors White" team and defeated the "Seniors Black" team in a high-scoring affair, 92-81, in the "Rocky Mountain Fall Showcase," sponsored by the Colorado Chaos Basketball Club.

The game featured the top senior talent in the state of Colorado, as well as at least one player from Wyoming.

Franklin and Knutson's White squad took an early lead, one they'd never relinquish. However, the Black team, led by Kyle Lewis (Kent Country Day), Anthony Porch (Montbello) and Kyle Behrens (Mountain Vista), rallied just before halftime. But the Black team could never get closer than six points the rest of the way.

Lewis had 20 points for the Black team.

Franklin, the 6-5 swingman from Aurora Central, scored 20 points on 7-of-17 field goals. He was 5 of 6 from the foul line and grabbed nine boards. Knutson, the 6-3 two-guard from Arapahoe who some say is as good a shooter as the state has produced in a decade, showed off his outside shooting prowess by nailing 9-of-13 buckets for 20 points. Knutson wrestled seven boards, as well.

The two future teammates could meet up in the state 5A playoffs next spring, as both Arapahoe and Aurora Central are expected to contend for the state title. Both are expected to contend individually for the 5A Mr. Basketball honor, as well.
