Buff Basketball Madness On Tap

Fans can get an early look at the Colorado men's and women's basketball teams Wednesday night during the teams' Buff Basketball Madness showcase.

Both the men's and women's teams promise remarkably different looks this season from last.

After playing with as few as eight players at times last season, head coach Kathy McConnell-Miller has a full roster this year. Included on that roster are a healthy Kara Richards in the low post, guards Bianca Smith and Susie Powers, eligible after sitting out transfer time, and newcomers Whitney Houston, Candace Rucker, Courtney Dunn and Aija Putnina.

Meanwhile, the men's team features eight new faces, who will join Preseason All-Big 12 first-team selection Richard Roby.

Wednesday's action includes an alumni game, followed by scrimmages from both teams, a 3-point shooting contest and a dunk contest.

While some might think the high-flying Roby is the odds-on favorite to win the dunk contest, word is that a couple of the newcomers to the men's team are the guys to watch for.

"I'd bet it will be between Jeremy Williams and Jermyl Jackson-Wilson," head coach Ricardo Patton said Monday, adding that guard Dominique Coleman might be the longshot winner.

Freshman guard Xavier Silas would have none of that talk before practice on Monday though, saying he was the man to beat.

The doors open at Coors at 7 p.m. and the festivities are scheduled to begin at 7:50. Admission is free.
