Maiava Will Decide Between Two

When CU commit Garth Gerhart started waivering to ASU, the CU staff had to find a back-up plan at Center and they found one a couple weeks ago. Today, Gerhart committed to ASU and the staff immediately offered Kealaka'i Maiava. The Center will sign with either CU or New Mexico State tomorrow and tells the BSN what he likes about both schools. He also gives us an update on CU prospect, Sione Tau.

As a senior, Kealaka'i Maiava averaged 10-12 pancake blocks at center and on defense, at tackle, he had 12 tackles and a blocked field goal. Maiava was named first team all-district and state. "I am aggressive and physical," Maiava says.

It has come down to the final stretch for Maiava as he will make his decision tomorrow between Colorado and New Mexico State and sign with one of the schools. The thing is, he has not visited either campus which makes the decision tougher. The only school he visited was Idaho the weekend of January 27th. "I liked Idaho, but I will go to either Colorado or New Mexico State. The only decision I have now is whether I want to play in the Big 12 or the WAC. I am undecided but my family is kind of leaning towards Colorado."

Maiava is well aware of the Hawaiian and Poly pipeline going on in Boulder. "I know that Michael Sipili is there and Jordan Dizon and B.J. Beatty."

The Center prospect is also friends with another CU prospect, Sione Tau. In fact, he had just gotten off the phone with Tau before the BSN contacted him. "Sione just told me he is still deciding between Arizona and Colorado."

Coaches Strausser, Cabral and Hawkins visited Maiava last week and the prospect was impressed with what he heard. "They told me a lot about the school and how they think I could fit in there. It was a good visit and my family liked them."

The BSN will speak with Maiava tomorrow morning about his final decision. He will sign at a ceremony at his school at 7 AM.
