"He's got a monster paper he's working on," Hawkins said. "I told him to take the day off, then we'll practice him Saturday, then we'll check the progress of his paper on Monday."
• Friday is pro timing day, where seniors from last year's team will work out for NFL scouts and coaches. On Saturday, the Buffs will conduct their first scrimmage of the spring. But because of low offensive line numbers, Hawkins said it will be more of a "live practice" than a true scrimmage. It will take place at Folsom Field beginning at 10 a.m. It is open to the public.
• New defensive end Drew Hudgins caught Hawkins' eye Thursday. Hawkins said the transition from Juco to Division I is typically easier for a defensive lineman in terms of scheme, but the challenge is a higher level of intensity and more emphasis on technique. "He's done a nice job. He's very active. He's got a good motor," Hawkins said of the Juco transfer.
• Mason Crosby was at practice for a bit Thursday. In street clothes, of course. His replacement, Kevin Eberhart, had some good kicks in the early evening practice. In one field goal drill, Eberhart drilled what appeared to be a 50-yarder. To put him under a little bit of pressure, head coach Dan Hawkins had Eberhart attempt a 45-yarder with some stakes attached. If he made it the team didn't have to run. Miss it, and they do. He made it, and his teammates hoisted him on their shoulders.
"We've just got to keep heaping those things on him a little bit," Hawkins said. "We'll find out more in the scrimmages. But the thing about him, he's been around here so long and seen so many situations I think he's conditioned the best he can be to be ready for (pressure situations)."
