New Hoops Facility In The Works

With official word on Wednesday that Jeff Bzdelik would be the next head men's basketball coach at Colorado came news CU is pushing forward on plans for a new practice facility for its basketball teams on campus.

Jeff Bzdelik's contract will be effective Friday. The deal is worth $750,000 per year plus "numerous incentives, similar to those included in the packages for football coach Dan Hawkins and women's basketball coach Kathy McConnell-Miller." The latter two have incentive clauses based in areas such as their players' academic achievement and success on the field and court.

Bzdelik's contract must be approved by the CU Board of Regents.

Colorado will pay Air Force, Bzdelik's former team, a buyout sum of $270,000 for his contract with the Falcons to be void. Meanwhile, CU has attached a buyout clause to Bzdelik's Colorado contract which calls for a $750,000 fee if he leaves in 2008 or '09, and a $500,000 fee if he leaves in 2010, '11 or '12.

However, that buyout clause is void if CU has not secured the funding and broken ground on a new practice facility within the next three years. The practice facility will be built adjacent to the Coors Events Center.

CU players were relegated to practicing in the student recreation center several times last season when Coors was being used for various purposes.

The facility upgrade made an impression on Bzdelik.

"They not only talked about (the new facility), they put it in writing. It's right there in black and white," he said. "It's just not talk, it's tangible. I know it will be done.

"So there's a strong commitment here, and there's no place to go but up."

Also, renovations to Coors are underway that will allow the CU men's and women's coaching staffs to move their offices from Folsom Field to Coors by the end of the summer.
