Morning Practice Report

The Buffs practiced for a little more than two hours this morning mostly under cloud cover , but the sun began to emerge toward the end. The practice fields have taken a lot of moisture the past few days from heavy rains so the past two practices have mostly been on the Field Turf where the bubble sits during winter.

Four-star wide receiver Randall Carroll and most of his Cathedral High School team from Los Angeles attended practice. Most of the team watched from the sidelines but Carroll was out in the middle of the field standing with Jashon Sykes most of the time. Cathedral is in the area participating in a camp in Denver.

There was also another recruit at practice who wasn't with the Cathedral team. He looked like a defensive lineman. I'll try to find out who he was and let you know. Carroll is committed to USC but has said he is keeping his options open. He could be a big help in Boulder.

The Buffs offense would be explosive a year from now with him and CU commit Jarrod Darden joining Josh Smith, Kendrick Celestine, Markques Simas, Ray Polk, Ryan Deehan, Ryan Wallace and all the veterans.

Deehan continues to impress me. He made some nice grabs over the middle while he was pretty well covered this morning. Fellow freshman tight end Ryan Wallace has had his moments, but he seems to drop more balls than Deehan. I'm not trying to pick on the guy.

Quarterback Tyler Hansen continues to impress me with steady play at a young age. He sort of reminds me of a little taller version of Todd Reesing or Chase Daniel because of his running ability. I know offensive coordinator Mark Helfrich has been quoted saying he expects Hansen to push Matt Ballenger and Nick Nelson. I'm beginning to believe it. The real test will be moving forward with more offense being installed and how well he handles it.

Ray Polk had a tough practice. Didn't seem to know where he was supposed to lineup a few times. He did have a nice long run to the house, but just as he got to the end zone, cornerback Jalil Brown came up and stripped the ball away. Dan Hawkins made Polk crawl across the field on his knees and elbows while holding two footballs for committing the turnover. Didn't look fun.

The Buffs will be back on the field at 4:30, barring a weather problem.
