Gary Barnett Press Conference Quotes

BOULDER - University of Colorado head football coach Gary Barnett held his weekly media luncheon Tuesday afternoon at the Dal Ward Athletic Center. The following are excerpts from his press conference along with notes from the day's events.

On the Oklahoma Loss:

GENERAL-"We just missed a great opportunity. I felt like Oklahoma really beat us at our own game. They really beat us at the line of scrimmage in particular. We made no plays on offense. Brian Calhoun had a great game for a freshman, and he made some great plays. The redzone just killed us, though. We made too many mistakes down there. Those three field goals hurt us. Jeremy (Bloom) made a great run back. I feel like that gave us some great momentum. We had some opportunities; we just did not make any plays...Oklahoma did. We were not just good enough on offense to win the game."

On the Alamo Bowl:

GENERAL-"The opportunity for us to have a 10-win season is huge. Back-to-back 10-win seasons would be really special. We are going to prepare to win this game. We will have fun, too, but we want to win this.

"I don't anticipate (our players) being disappointed about this game. I anticipate that they will be excited coming off (the loss in) our last game. We are fortunate to have another game this season."

ON DISAPPOINTMENT-

"My disappointment has nothing to do with the Alamo Bowl. My disappointment is in the missed opportunity we had to win the Big 12 Championship. We are going to look at the positives here. The only disappointment is that we missed out on the Big 12 Championship."

ON PLAYING IN THE ALAMO BOWL AFTER FINISHING SECOND IN THE BIG 12

"I understand that is the way it's done, and we knew that going in. That in itself is not right, but that is a Big 12 issue. That is something the commissioner and committee have to look over. Kansas State made the same case a couple years ago. But if you want to be in a B.C.S. bowl, you have to win the big game. It seems a little unfair, but that's how it goes."

ON PLAYING WISCONSIN-

"I think they are a good match for us. We will match up well against them from what I have seen. They are a good, physical team. They have lost to four ranked teams this year. They are a pretty good football team. This will be a war for us."

On Kicker Pat Brougham:

ON THE THREE MISSED FIELD GOALS-

"Between (kicker) and quarterback, those are the two most pressure positions to play on a football team. There is a lot of pressure at those positions, and they have to do well. Pat feels horrible, and I know that. But we play as a team. Why did we have to kick a field goal when we were inside the 20-yardline? If we do that, then its 11 guys who don't get their jobs done-not just one."

Tuesday Notes:

The Buffs did not practice Tuesday afternoon, but will return to the gridiron this coming Wednesday and Thursday before taking the following six days off during the university exam period...

CU will have 10 practices leading up to the Alamo Bowl, and Barnett said he plans to focus on preparing several underclassmen during that time in scrimmage situations. "We are probably going to scrimmage more than we usually do with our second teams. I am going to practice them for next fall, not this game. I am going to really work all the guys who figure in right now to be in a big position next year." Barnett said he would emphasize the raw quarterback, offensive line and defensive back positions over the next several weeks...

Junior cornerback Phil Jackson, who sustained a dislocated shoulder in the second quarter against OU, will probably play against Wisconsin in the bowl, but according to Barnett, may need surgery in the next couple months...

Barnett said he is still unsure as to whether or not junior tailbacks Chris Brown (bruised sternum) or Bobby Purify (ankle) would play in the Alamo Bowl. Barnett did say that Brown will not practice this week, and that Purify may practice lightly.
