Fans, alumni and Alamo Bowl presented by MasterCard board and staff welcomed the participating teams to San Antonio on Sunday, December 22. Wisconsin arrived at 7:30 p.m. while Colorado arrived at 11 p.m.
Mariachis serenaded the players as they stepped off the bus while fans and staff welcomed the teams by placing Alamo Bowl presented by MasterCard stickers on them as they came into the hotel. Although the weather was wet, the players and coaches were glad to be in San Antonio.
"I don't need a jacket, I don't need a top coat," said Wisconsin head coach Barry Alvarez. "It was starting to rain and snow when we left, so I am fired up and excited to be here."
Colorado head coach Gary Barnett echoed Alvarez's thoughts.
"It's great to be here," said Barnett. "Warm weather, finals are over for the guys and they're anxious to be in Texas."
The weather forecast for San Antonio this week calls for partly cloudy skies and temperatures in the mid 60's. The Alamo Bowl presented by MasterCard will be played Saturday, December 28 at 7 p.m.
Bowl Week Events Capture Excitement of 2002 Alamo Bowl presented by MasterCard
The big game is just the conclusion of a great week in San Antonio.
First, show your school spirit at the Alamo Bowl Pep Rally at the Arneson River Theatre on Thursday, December 26 at 6:30 p.m. This free event will be the pep rally of the year as both coaches and the team captains will be joined on stage by the pep bands and cheerleaders, while the players travel the Riverwalk in river cruisers courtesy of Yanaguana Cruises, Inc. There will also be a "Battle of the University Bands."
And, don't forget your tickets to the Wells Fargo Alamo Bowl Kickoff Luncheon on Friday, December 27 at noon at the San Antonio Marriott Rivercenter. The two head coaches and their teams will headline this 1,500-person luncheon that captures the excitement, pageantry and revelry that surrounds the Alamo Bowl.
Then, the evening before the game you may want to put on your cocktail attire to attend the SYLVANIA Alamo Bowl Great Party on Friday, December 27 at 6:30 p.m. This bowl week favorite is a refreshing twist to the black-tie gala clutter. The Great Party's unique, fun format will feature "Stars Over Vegas" theme and include celebrity impersonators and casino games. Guests will also be entertained by The Klocks
Head to Sunset Station on Game Day for a Host of Pregame Activities.
On game day make plans to go to Sunset Station, an entertainment complex 50 steps north of the Alamodome that will be the gathering place for all this year's pregame festivities. Local fans, alumni groups and the university bands will all join together to celebrate before the big game at the Corporate Express Alamo Bowl Pregame Party, the Opening three hours prior to kick-off, the Corporate Express Alamo Bowl Pregame Party provides a lunch buffet, an open bar and music including a special pre-game performance by both university bands for bowl sponsors and each university's traveling party.
It is the perfect beginning to an exciting college football showdown.
