Colorado football head coach Gary Barnett said he hopes to have the position filled sometime during the next two weeks.
"We're disappointed that Kevin left, but given the reputation of the University of Colorado, we'll have an abundance of excellent candidates," Barnett said in a statement.
OU Media Relations Director Kenny Mossman said the Sooners are still in a hiring process and could not verify who is in the running for the position. There will be an announcement when the Sooners decide who will replace Hayes. Barnett mentioned Sumlin's coaching performance against the Sooners when the offensive coordinator orchestrated an A&M 30-26 win over OU at College Station, Texas, in November.
"He finished the year as the offensive coordinator at A&M, and one of the things he accomplished in that role was their win over Oklahoma," Barnett said on CUBuffs.com. Sumlin replaced Dino Babers at offensive coordinator after the Aggies lost to Virginia Tech 13-3 at College Station in September.
Sumlin coached at Texas A&M for two years before head coach R.C. Slocum was replaced with Alabama's Dennis Franchione. Sumlin played linebacker at Purdue from 1983-86. He walked on as a freshman and lettered all four years.
He moved to the coaching ranks as a graduate assistant linebackers coach with Washington State in 1989.
