Many times in viewing a 6'8 end, recruiters will immediately envision a potential interior lineman. A different story will be told this fall in 6'8 230 DE Calais Campbell. One of the top prospects in Colorado for 2003, Calais has already begun to see interest pour in from around the nation.
Name: Calais Campbell
Position: Defensive End/Tight End
Size: 6'8 230
School: Denver South HS (Denver, CO)
Early Word on Calais:
Many times, anyone would have to question a coach's beliefs that his star 6'8 player will be able to stay at end. However, it is not hard, when your speaking to former Chicago Bears DE Ryan Mullaney.
"Calais is the best defensive end in the state," Coach Mullaney said. "It is hard to compare him to the skill positions, but at defensive end someone is going to have to improve leaps and bounds this upcoming season to pass him. Barring any un-seen acts of nature, Calais should have every opportunity to prove himself as one of the top in the nation."
Calais has not yet received any offers, but you can expect his first offer to come at any point this spring.
"Calais has the ability to un-coil from his stance like a snake striking out," Coach Mullaney added. "He is long and has lean mass. When he puts his hands in the air, he stands nine feet tall. He is something every college dreams of in a defensive end. I feel his best long-term potential is at defensive end, although, some may recruit him at tight end. Either way, they'll be getting a great player."
Calais recorded 17 sacks this past year for the Rebels in a conference that averaged seven passes per game. Also was named 1st Team All State in Class 5A. He also carries a 3.3 GPA and is a stand-out basketball player for the Rebels.
