Creighton's "Soctoberfest" is scheduled for September, but the German members of the Bluejays held their own celebration Friday night in their 2-0 victory over 14th-ranked Tulsa.
The two ranked squads exchanged scoring opportunities throughout the first half, but neither team found the back of the net in the first 45. Creighton outshot the visitors by a 12-10 margin, and each team earned three corner kicks in the opening period.
Creighton scored its first goal of the season in the 63rd minute. Freshman Fabian Herbers, a native of Ahaus, Germany, received a long through pass from his countryman Timo Pitter and beat the Golden Hurricane goalie with a low, right-footed shot that snuck inside the near post for his first goal in the Creighton kit.
The Bluejays would protect their narrow margin until relief was provided late in the game. Moments after Tulsa squandered another legitimate opportunity to knot the game, Pitter joined the 2013 goal-scorer's club with a shot that trickled across the face of the goal and into the side netting. Fellow sophomore – and German – Vincent Keller assisted the insurance goal in the matches waning minutes.
Creighton keeper Alex Bolowich made seven saves en route to the clean sheet.
Creighton moves to 1-0-0 on the season and will try to improve to 2-0-0 on Sunday night with Cal Poly visiting Morrison Stadium.
