St. Joe's (2-1) did pretty well to contain Creighton superstar Doug McDermott for 39 minutes and 55 seconds on Saturday evening, but it was the final five seconds that ended up mattering the most.
With Creighton (3-0) down one and St. Joe's out of fouls to give, Jahenns Manigat inbounded the ball to a cutting McDermott. McDermott knocked down a fade-away jumper as Halil Kanacevic collided with him. The two-time All-American sank the ensuing free throw, which gave CU a two-point lead. McDermott's three-point play gave him 20 points on the night and put CU up for good.
Devin Brooks stole Chris Wilson's pass near mid-court and knocked down two free throws to seal the victory. Although Wilson's turnover helped finalize the outcome, he did his part to put the Hawks in position to win. Although he entered the game 1-4 from behind the arc, the junior knocked down six of 11 attempts and finished with 18 points at Saturday night. Freshman DeAndre Bembry also shot it well for the hosts. He made shot four of eight shots from three-point range and led the Hawks with 20 points.
While the Hawks forced McDermott to earn his 17 points in the first 39 minutes, they lost fellow senior Ethan Wragge on numerous occasions. The Minnesotan made Phil Martelli's squad pay for the defensive lapses, knocking down 7 of 11 looks from deep and leading CU with 21 points at Hagan Arena.
The Creighton coaches were forced to roll with Brooks down the stretch when starting point guard Austin Chatman was forced to the bench with an injury, and Brooks responded. Brooks scored 16 points, grabbed four rebounds and distributed three assists in 21 minutes. Grant Gibbs was the fourth Jay in double figures, making five of six field goals for 11 points. The do-it-all veteran also added six boards and as many assists.
