The Creighton Bluejays (19-7, 10-4 BIG EAST) made their final road trip of the 2013 season, traveling to Queens, N.Y. and South Orange, N.J. over the weekend.
Both matches were decided in four sets. The Jays got revenge on St. John's (15-14, 4-9 BIG EAST) Friday afternoon but fell to Seton Hall (14-15, 5-9) on Saturday.
Two weeks ago, the Red Storm came to D.J. Sokol Arena and raced to a 2-0 lead before they defeated CU in five sets. Friday afternoon at Taffner Field House, it seemed the same might occur with St. John's winning the opening set 25-14 and holding the Jays to .100 hitting.
Unlike the first match-up, the Bluejays won the next three sets 25-22, 25-21 and 29-27, as hitting improved the rest of the match. Leading CU in kills were Leah McNary with 14 kills, Kelli Browning added 11 and Jess Bird recorded 10.
Michelle Sincer had 22 assists in the match, while Ashley Jensen handed out 16. Kate Elman finished with a team-high 18 digs. As a team, the Jays out-blocked the Red Storm 13-11 in the match. Following the win, Creighton sat in second place in the BIG EAST.
Saturday, the script was flipped with Creighton winning the opening set 25-18. They hit .283 as a team in the opening set, but the Pirates, who were swept in Omaha two weeks ago, won the next three sets 27-25, 28-26 and 25-17.
Offensively, Bird (16) and Browning (11) combined for 27 kills. Sicner dished out 29 more assists, while Jensen added 16 for a total of 45. Elman recorded 25 digs on the night, giving her 1,000 for her career.
With the defeat, the Bluejays now sit in a tie for third with Butler at 10-4 heading into the last weekend of the regular season. CU returns home this weekend, hosting Georgetown on Friday night at 7 p.m. and closing out the regular season with Villanova at 1 p.m. on Sunday.
Creighton will host the 2013 BIG EAST Conference volleyball tournament November 29 and 30 with the semifinals that Friday at 4 and 6:30 p.m.. The finals are scheduled for Saturday at 5 p.m..
Current BIG EAST standings: Marquette (13-1, 21-5), Xavier (11-3, 20-9), Butler (10-4, 23-6), Creighton (10-4, 19-7), Seton Hall (6-9, 15-15), St. John's (5-10, 16-15), Villanova (4-11, 12-16), Georgetown (4-11, 10-18), DePaul (2-12, 16-12)
