Creighton women basketball team (4-5) looks to snap its three-game losing streak when they head to Las Vegas for the "Duel in the Desert" this weekend. The Jays will face Clemson (6-3), Oregon State (7-2) and the host, UNLV (2-7), starting Thursday night.
Coach Flanery's squad has already faced a tough non-conference slate, which included the likes of Minnesota, Kansas, Oklahoma, BYU and Nebraska thus far. The three games this weekend will be the last before BIG EAST play begins on Saturday, December 28, at home, versus Villanova.
Thursday, December 19: Oregon State Beavers (7-2)/PAC-12
When the Beavers and Jays square off, it'll be the fourth time, but the first since 2006. Creighton leads the series 3-1. They've previously met in Las Vegas, which occurred in 1985 and the only win by Oregon State. The next three have been Bluejay wins. Last season, Oregon State finished 10-21, including a 4-14 PAC-12 record. Three starters lead seven returning letter winners from a year ago. They were selected eighth in the preseason poll ahead of Washington State, Arizona State, Arizona and Oregon.
Friday, December 20: Clemson Tigers (6-3)/ACC
This will be the first meeting between the two schools. Last season Clemson finished 9-21 with a 5-13 record in ACC play. They're a veteran team that returns all five starters in addition to nine total letter winners. In the preseason conference poll, they were picked 14th with only Virginia Tech and Wake Forest behind them.
UNLV Lady Rebels (2-7)/Mountain West, Saturday, December 21:
Finally, the Jays face UNLV on Saturday for only the fourth time in program history, with the Lady Rebels holding a 3-1 advantage. Jays' fans will remember the last meeting fondly, as CU took down UNLV 73-52 to win the 2004 WNIT. Creighton is 0-2 in Las Vegas, but the last meeting in the desert came in 1989. A season ago, they finished 11-19 with a 8-8 mark in the Mountain West. Four starters and ten letter winners are back for this season. In the MWC preseason poll, they were picked fifth, which was ahead of Utah State, but behind New Mexico. The Rebels picked up two first-place votes.
Radio: Each game begins at 9:30 p.m. central time and can be heard on 1180 Zone2, with Glen Sisk handling the play-by-play all weekend from Las Vegas.
