Jays Baseball Picked to Win BIG EAST

CU narrowly topped Seton Hall and St. John's in the preseason poll.

The Creighton baseball team will begin their first season in the BIG EAST Conference as the team to beat, according to the preseason poll.

One of three newcomers to the conference, the Bluejays collected 32 points, just edging out Seton Hall and St. John's for first place in the rankings.

In addition to the Jays being picked as the preseason favorites, four members of the team collected all-BIG EAST honors. Senior Mike Gerber was named preseason Player of the Year, while sophomore Tommy Strunc named Pitcher of the Year. Junior Jake Peter and senior Brian Sova were named preseason all-BIG EAST.

The top four teams in the regular season will qualify for the 2014 BIG EAST baseball championship, which will be held May 23-25 in Brooklyn. MCU Park will be the site, with the winner getting an automatic bid to the NCAA tournament. FOX Sports 1 will air the championship game on May 25 with first pitch schedule for 1 p.m.

Next weekend, the team begins the season in Little Rock, Arkansas against Arkansas-Little Rock with a three-games series. The games on Friday and Saturday will begin at 3 p.m., with Sunday's first pitch scheduled for 1 p.m..
