The Edge: SMU Mustangs

Dayton Insider will bring "The Edge" to all the fans before every game of the season. This edition of "The Edge" Dayton Insider will focus on the SMU Mustangs out of Dallas, Texas.

Center: Kurt Huelsman (4.5ppg/8.5rpg) / Bamba Fall (6.3ppg/4.0rpg)
This will again be a very big test for Kurt. He has done a great job so far this season and will have yet another chance to show that he belongs to stay in the starting lineup when Norman Plummer returns at full strength. Bamba is coming off a weekend were he had 10 blocks over 3 games and could cause the flyers some problems. This will also be Kurt's first road game so we have to wait and see how the freshman responds.
Edge: Kurt Huelsman

Power Forward: Charles Little (7.0ppg / 4.5rpg) / Ike Ofoegbu (14.0ppg / 6.7rpg)
Charles is going to be at a height disadvantage when he Matches up against the 6-8 Ike Ofoegbu. This is nothing new for Charles and showed last year that he usually excels against a bigger opponent. Ike, however, has been very impressive this far and seems to fit in great with what Coach Doherty wants from the team. This is a match up that could once again be a big factor in the outcome of the game. This is also a position that the bench will play a significant role in determining the outcome.
Edge: Ike Ofoegbu

Wing Forward: Monty Scott (12.5ppg / 5.5rpg) / Devon Pearson (9.3ppg / 5.0rpg)
Look for Monty to have a really big game as the team will look for him to show leadership in the first road game of the season. Monty has looked good so far this season and has looked like he is ready to bust for a big game. Dayton Insider expects that bust out game to come this Saturday and will be the reason the Flyers come out on top. Devon has played well so far this season and even had himself a game winning tip at the buzzer to beat Illinois State.
Edge: Monty Scott

Shooting Guard: Marcus Johnson (15.0ppg / 6.0rpg) / Derrick Roberts (9.7ppg / 1.7rpg)
The question has to be can Derrick Roberts handle the Athleticism of Marcus Johnson? Even though Marcus did not have a great game against NCA&T he had some amazing tip ins at crucial parts of the game. Derrick is shooting over 56% from the three point line and Dayton Insider feels that Marcus has yet to show that he is capable of closing out quick enough to challenge shots. This will also be the first game away from UD Arena for Marcus.
Edge: Even

Point Guard: Brian Roberts (29.5ppg / 4.5rpg) / Jon Killen (10.7ppg / 5.7apg)
Brian Roberts has been the best player for the flyers so far this season. He has taken big shot after big shot. Brian also showed that he is not just going to score from the outside. This is important as teams have shown that it is much tougher to shot from the outside on the road. Brian will once again play an instrumental part if they flyers are to have success at SMU. Jon has done an outstanding job finding his teammates; however he has also turned the ball over way too many times and will have to do a better job handling the pressure. Jon has a big height advantage and could use that to even the match up between him and Brian Roberts.
Edge: Brian Roberts

Bench: Dayton Flyers / SMU Mustangs
Norman Plummer has not been this excited to play a college basketball game in years. He has shown his commitment to the Flyers by showing his enthusiasm and coaching ability from the sideline while serving his four game suspension. Jimmie Binnie is trying to get out of his slump and will be called onto to help the Flyers win this game. London must cut down on his turnovers and continue to create havoc on the defensive end. SMU has a very small bench in numbers but Donates Racauskas brings the SMU instant scoring and rebounding off the bench. He is the Mustangs 3rd leading scorer so far this year and is also the teams leading rebounder. Donatas has been recovering from an injury and trying to regain a spot in the starting lineup, so look for him to be a major factor in this game.
Edge: Dayton Flyers

Final Outcome
The Dayton Flyers were unable to win big games on the road last year. This year's team is more mature and more talented so look for them to change that pattern. Norman Plummer is going to bring energy from the bench and also bring more scoring to the post. SMU will not back down and will try to defend the home court advantage. Andres will be missed in the game more so than the others because of the size that SMU brings. Look for this to come down to the wire with Monty Scott and Brian Roberts taking control and winning the first road game of the year.
Prediction: Dayton 64 – SMU 60
