Morgan Park Sophomore Picks Up DePaul Offer

Billy Garrett, Jr. visited DePaul's Blue Madness at McGrath Arena in Lincoln Park last night. Today the class of 2013 guard from Morgan Park walked away with a scholarship offer from DePaul coach Oliver Purnell.

Billy Garrett, Jr. impressed Purnell enough on the AAU circuit this summer playing point guard with the Mac Irvin Fire 16-U team for the Blue Demons to offer him a scholarship.

The 6-2 guard is arguably the second best player with the Morgan Park Mustangs. He's teamed up in the backcourt at Morgan Park with Louisville-bound senior Wayne Blackshear

Garrett displayed great leadership skills for a freshman when he led the Mustangs to the Chicago Public League championship title last season. With Blackshear, UIC-bound Jerome Brown, and fellow sophomore guard Markee Williams, the Mustangs figure to make another run at the title this year.

This is the second scholarship offer for Garrett, who picked up an offer from UNLV following his freshman season. He has also received interest from Louisville coach Rick Pitino.

Basketball recruiting talk around the dinner table in the Garrett household is always interesting. Billy is the son of DePaul assistant coach Billy Garrett, Sr. Thus, Billy, Jr. has been around the DePaul team quite a bit. This summer he teamed up with some of the DePaul players in a summer league.

"I got a chance to see a couple practices, he's a really good coach," Garrett said of Purnell. "I like the way he communicates with his players. On top of that, he's a nice guy. I think he does a great job coaching the team."

Garrett observed last night's DePaul Blue Madness festivities from the stands along with some of his Morgan Park teammates.

"I thought the players did a good job," said Garrett. "They had fun. They had a lot of energy. I thought they played pretty well during the scrimmage. I think they're going to be a lot better this year."

Garrett has been sidelined recently with an ankle injury, but plans to be 100 percent in time for the start of practice at Morgan Park next month.
