DePaul Hosts Blue-White Scrimmage

Sophomore Tony Freeland and freshman Brandon Young led DePaul's Blue-White intrasquad scrimmage on Saturday night with 18 points apiece. The preseason scrimmage gave DePaul coach Oliver Purnell an opportunity to evaluate his team and experiment with different lineup combinations.

"I thought we made some progress from last week," Purnell said of his team's performance. "I thought we got up and down the floor pretty good at times."

Purnell achieved what he had hoped to accomplish during the scrimmage.

"I thought that JK (junior point guard Jeremiah Kelly) played well in the first half, Tony Freeland, and Brandon (Young), the freshman point guard, hung in there all night long," said Purnell. "Those are the guys that kind of jumped out at me. I thought that Krys Faber was a factor down low when we utilized him. Those are some of the guys that caught my attention."

Purnell broke the scrimmage down into three periods – two 10 minute periods followed by a final 15 minute period, with players changing teams after each period.

Purnell and Associate Head Coach Ron Bradley directed the Blue squad, while assistant coaches Brian Ellerbe and Billy Garrett led the White squad.

For the first session, Purnell started Moses Morgan, Brandon Young, Michael Bizoukas, Devin Hill and Krys Faber on the Blue team, while Jeremiah Kelly, Mike Stovall, Mario Stula, Cleveland Melvin, and Tony Freeland started for the White team.

The White team dominated that first session by a 27-13 margin with Freeland leading the way with 11 points.

The second session featured Joe Belcaster, Jimmy Drew, Faber, Freeland, Stula, Bizoukas, and Kelly on the White squad, and Morgan, Stovall, Young, Melvin, Hill, and freshman walkon Edwind McGhee on the Blue team.

The two teams played to a 22-22 draw.

The Blue team comprised of Young, Morgan, Faber, Freeland, Kelly, Belcaster, and Drew won the final session 28-26 over the White team with Stula, Hill, Bizoukas, Melvin, Stovall, and McGhee.
