Second Half Burst Keys DePaul Over SIUE

It took a little while to get the DePaul engine revved up in Edwardsville, but when it did reach peak RPM's there was plenty of dust in the rear view mirror.

The Blue Demons' second half offensive burst and stingy defense helped them beat SIU-Edwardsville 76-40 Friday night.

DePaul led 39-30 with 18:09 left in the game when they went on a 34-7 run. The Cougars were held scoreless until the 11:46 mark.

The Blue Demons (8-1) held SIUE to 24% field goal shooting for the game.

Both teams suffered a scoring drought in the first half. A jumper by China Threatt gave DePaul a 14-8 lead, but the teams combined for only six points over the next four minutes. A Deirdre Naughton jumper gave the Blue Demons a 20-14 lead.

SIUE (2-5) tied the game at 23 on a jumper by Sydney Stahlberg at 4:24, but four points by Sam Quigley helped DePaul gain a 33-26 advantage at the break. Quigley scored 10 of her 14 points in the first half. She also had seven assists. Quigley has 999 career points at DePaul and needs just one more point to get to the 1,000 point milestone.

DePaul outscored SIUE 36-10 in the paint and went 27-35 from the line. Quigley and Keisha Hampton (14 points) shot a combined 14-15 from the stripe.

Felicia Chester scored 13 points for DePaul. Katherine Harry added nine points, seven rebounds and three blocked shots. Anna Martin (eight points) sank DePaul's only three pointer.

Amanda Ledbetter led SIUE with 11 points.

DePaul opens up Big East play this Tuesday at Pittsburgh at 6:00 CST.
