2011 Wing Visits DePaul

With five recruits already in the fold for 2011, DePaul coach Oliver Purnell isn't done recruiting for the class of 2011 just yet.

Charles McKinney, a 6-4 wing from Quality Education Prep in North Carolina, took an official visit to DePaul this week and checked out the Lincoln Park campus.

McKinney is a Chicago-area native who attended Maine East for three years before transferring to Quality Education. He's now home for the holidays on break from school and paid a visit to DePaul coach Oliver Purnell.

"It was great, I liked it a lot," said McKinney. "We went out to some nice restaurants. It's more of a family environment. I watched some practices and saw where I can fit right in. It went well, it was a good visit."

Could a return to Chicago be in the offing for McKinney?

"The location is important," said Charles. "It would be great if my family could support me where I am at."

McKinney also took an official visit to Oregon State over the weekend and got to know the Beavers.

"Oregon State, it's a small town," said McKinney. "They like their basketball there. It was a little slow because the students were off campus for the holidays. I liked it down there. I got to hang out with the players."

McKinney also plans on taking an official visit to VCU in mid-January. He is also getting recruiting interest from the University of Iowa.

Purnell spotted McKinney in action with the Full Package AAU program in Merrillville, Indiana in late-July and liked him then.

One aspect of McKinney's game that appeals to college coaches is his defensive prowess and is capable of guarding multiple positions.

"I'm a lock-down defensive player," said McKinney. "I can get to the rim, but I can shoot a lot too. A lot of people don't know that I can shoot."

Charles is planning on making his college decision by late-January around his birthday and knows what he wants from his next school.

"I'm looking for a school with a good coach, good teammates, good academics, that's ready to play," said McKinney
