With DePaul coach Oliver Purnell watching at center court, Steve Taylor dropped 20 points and grabbed 11 boards against the Farragut Admirals tonight to advance to the Class 4A IHSA semifinals in Peoria on Friday.
What was remarkable was the versatility that Taylor displayed while scoring those points. Taylor dunked. Taylor scored from beyond the arc. Taylor dropped a hook shot.
He did it all despite dealing with some down time coming into the game.
"Steve was tremendous today," said Simeon coach Rob Smith. "He hadn't practiced in two days. He hurt his groin. He gave us some great confidence."
Taylor's game is developing and his versatility showed tonight.
So, how does he it do it all?
"Practice, practice," said Taylor.
Taylor is arguably the number one prospect in the state of Illinois for the class of 2012. His game is reminiscent of another former Simeon Wolverine who is now playing professionally – former Blue Demon Bobby Simmons.
Taylor is a power forward who is working on his game to where he can become more of a combo forward at the next level.
"I need to develop my ballhandling," said Taylor. "I'd like to play the three."
Taylor, who has an offer from DePaul, has a number of schools keeping an eye on him going into the spring and summer.
"DePaul, Ohio University, Illinois, SIU and Northwestern," said Taylor.
Right now, Taylor has no favorites and doesn't plan to commit early. Despite speculation that he might switch to the Illinois Flash this spring, Taylor told WeAreDePaul.com that he plans to return to the Mac Irvin Fire on the AAU circuit.
For now Steve is focused on winning a state championship at Simeon this weekend.
"I didn't get to play downstate last year," said Taylor. "So, I'm super excited."
