Clemons Headed to the Big East

Montray Clemons, a 6-8, 220 lb. forward from Mack Academy in Charlottte, North Carolina, offered up his verbal commitment to a Big East school today. Learn where this class of 2011 forward plans to sign in this report.

DePaul coach Oliver Purnell's 2011 recruiting class grew to seven members today with the addition of Montray Clemons.

Clemons verbally committed to Purnell following his official visit to DePaul's Lincoln Park campus this weekend. He intends to sign with the Blue Demons during the spring signing period.

Clemons originally hails from Baltimore, Maryland and is a former AAU teammate of DePaul's Cleveland Melvin.

"It's a great opportunity," said Clemons. "It's in the Big East. They're rebuilding. This was (Purnell's) first year. It's a great opportunity to come into DePaul and change everything around for them."

Clemons chose DePaul over strong interest from Auburn and Illinois. Both Tony Barbee and Bruce Weber traveled to North Carolina to see Clemons this week.

Clemons' recruiting interest exploded in the last month after receiving a qualifying standardized test score. Montray had also been receiving interest from Alabama, Charlotte, Duquesne, Pittsburgh, Rutgers, Seton Hall, Tennessee, Texas Tech, Virginia Tech, and Western Kentucky.

"Montray is 6-8, a face-up four, very athletic, but not as athletic as Cleveland," said Cecil Kirk coach Anthony Lewis, who has coach both Melvin and Clemons. "He shoots the ball, he can put it on the deck and take it to the bucket. He's a very, very good player."

Clemons appears to be a versatile forward with a solid mid-range game who reminds Lewis of another player from Maryland who is currently in the NBA with the Memphis Grizzlies.

"He's a face-up four guy," said Lewis. "I tell you what, he's in the mold of a Sam Young. He's got some range."

Clemons joins Macari Brooks, Jamee Crockett, Shane Larkin, Charles McKinney, and Derrell Robertson in the Class of 2011 for DePaul along with transfer Donnavan Kirk.
