DePaul Loses Larkin and Releases Schedule

In what was a busy day in Lincoln Park on Thursday, the DePaul men's basketball team said goodbye to freshman point guard Shane Larkin and announced their 2011 non-conference schedule.

DePaul coach Oliver Purnell announced that incoming freshman Shane Larkin, a 5-11 point guard from Orlando, Florida, will not be attending the university. Larkin had enrolled and completed the first summer school session in June and July, but did not return to the program following a break in late-July.

In a statement, DePaul Athletics cited "a medical condition that requires Larkin to be closer to his Orlando home."

"At this time, the best situation for my well-being is to remain in Florida," Larkin said in a statement. "I appreciate everything Coach Purnell and the staff have done to support me at this time."

"It crushed him," Larkin's father and former Cincinnati Reds shortstop Barry Larkin told ESPN.com. "It's a medical issue. I'm not at liberty to discuss my son's medical issues. It was probably one of the toughest things he's had to deal with. He felt terrible. He felt like he's let people down."

Scout.com's Brian Snow today speculated that Larkin will end up at the University of Miami. Larkin had been previously recruited by UM coach Jim Larranaga while he was at George Mason.

Larkin was a 3-star point guard who was ranked 28th at his position by Scout.com.

So what does this mean for the Blue Demons? It means that DePaul will be without depth at the point guard position this season. The burden at point guard will fall on returning sophomore Brandon Young, who was named to the Big East All-Rookie team last season.

As a freshman, Young averaged 12.4 points and 3.7 assists per game in the regular season and 11.7 points and 3.56 assists per game in Big East conference play.

Young will again be backed up by senior guard Jeremiah Kelly. Kelly averaged 7.6 points per game and dished out 2.9 assists per game last season.

Larkin's departure should also create opportunity for playing time in the backcourt for incoming freshman Macari Brooks from Rich South.

Larkin leaving also means that Purnell will need to look at adding a point guard in his recruiting class for 2012. The Blue Demons have three scholarships available for 2012.

One thing is for sure, the impact of Larkin leaving the team will be determined right away since the Blue Demons are leaving in one week for a 10-day trip to France and Monaco where they will take on French professional teams.

Non-Conference Schedule Released

Purnell announced the 2011 men's basketball schedule today as well. The Blue Demons will be playing three games on campus at McGrath-Phillips Arena this season. They had played two regular season games on campus last year.

DePaul will open the 2011-12 campaign facing Texas-Pan American, coached by Ryan Marks, on November 11th at McGrath-Phillips Arena.

The schedule also features at least two matchups with BCS teams. DePaul will open the Old Spice Classic in Orlando on Thanksgiving Day with the Minnesota Golden Gophers.

The Blue Demons will also host Ole Miss on December 1st in the Big East/SEC Challenge.

DePaul will travel to Loyola-Chicago on December 7th to open the newly remodeled Gentile Center. The Blue Demons also travel to Northern Illinois to take on the Huskies on December 14th.
